10 years of Windows 10

On July 29, 2015, Windows 10 came to save us from Windows 8.

Microsoft had a difficult task: to develop an operating system that would convince users to abandon Windows 7. Windows 8 failed to do that.

To achieve this, Microsoft removed the touch elements with which it initially wanted to conquer the tablet market.

The company has completely removed the Start screen with app tiles. In its place is a regular Windows desktop with optional app tiles in the Start menu.

Windows 10 surpassed its predecessor Windows 7 from spring 2017 to early 2018. By the end of 2021, Windows 10 had been installed on more than 80% of all Windows computers.

Free upgrades for Windows 7 and 8 users helped drive adoption of the operating system. At the time, Microsoft extended the free upgrade phases several times.

“The latest Windows”

Until the late 2010s, Windows 10 was supposed to be the “last Windows.” During the 2015 Ignite conference, then-Microsoft senior software engineer Jerry Nixon called Windows 10 “the last Windows” for the first time.

In the Windows Internals manual published by Microsoft (seventh edition, part 1), the authors wrote:

“There will be no official 'Windows 11'. Instead, Windows Update (or some other enterprise update model) will update existing Windows 10s to a new version.”

And Microsoft has done its miracle again… it is abandoning the popular Windows 10 and promoting the unpopular Windows 11.
