A great day for Ubuntu friends, as Canonical has just released the final version of the Ubuntu 16.10 Yakkety Yak operating system for desktop, server, and cloud computing.
Ubuntu 16.10 (Yakkety Yak) has been developing over the past six months, but today 13 October 2016 is now officially available for download at the company's repositories. The new operating system is for everyone who wants to use the latest software and GNU / Linux software releases on their personal computers, or in the cloud.
The most exciting feature of the new Ubuntu 16.10 is the Linux kernel 4.8, which brings support for the latest hardware that is being released, but it also contains some up-to-date data that is mostly based on GNOME 3.20 Stack.
So some of the preinstalled apps are based on the latest GNOME 3.22 Stack, except the file manager Nautilus (file manager), which remains in version 3.20.3. The LibreOffice suite comes in version 5.2 and Mozilla Firefox in the 49.0 version.
Also, the new Ubuntu 16.10 also features an experimental Unity 8 session, which is installed by default and is accessible through the login manager. Canonical has added Unity 8 mostly for trial purposes, although it knows it will not work on all computers.
Ubuntu 16.10 Yakkety Yak will be supported for nine months, until July 2017, which is the distribution's end date. From this date onwards it will no longer receive software and security updates, which means you will have to upgrade to the next version of Ubuntu, or use the stable version Ubuntu 16.04 LTS Xenial Xerus.
Ubuntu hardliners can download the new Ubuntu 16.10 with Linux kernel 4.8 in Desktop, Server and Cloud versions by the end of the post.
