EU 20 June 2025 Ecodesign Regulation in force

Two years after the European Commission's proposal, ecodesign requirements will enter into force in the EU on 20 June 2025With this regulation, binding requirements for durability and repairability will apply to smartphones, mobile phones, cordless phones and tablets.

At the same time, smartphones and tablets should have a standardized EU-wide energy label that would provide greater transparency on durability and repairability.

The regulations aim to limit the environmental impact of devices placed on the European Union (EU) market by establishing minimum requirements.

To allow smartphones and tablets to have a longer and safer lifespan, the new Ecodesign Regulation sets a binding update guarantee:

Manufacturers will have to provide free operating system and security updates for at least five years for these devices placed on the European market.

According to the regulation, spare parts such as batteries, cameras or screens must also be available for at least seven years, calculated from the end of sales. Important spare parts must also be available within 5 to 10 business days.

Furthermore, certain components such as batteries, screens or the back panel should be made available not only to “technically competent repairers” but also to end users.

Ecodesign requirements will include:

  • resistance to accidental drops or scratches and protection against dust and water
  • sufficiently durable batteries that can withstand at least 800 charge and discharge cycles while maintaining at least 80% of their original capacity
  • rules on disassembly and repair, including obligations for producers to make critical spare parts available within 5-10 working days and for 7 years after the end of sales of the product model on the EU market
  • availability of operating system upgrades for longer periods (at least 5 years from the end of market release date of the last product model unit)
  • non-discriminatory access for repair professionals to any software or firmware required for replacement

The European Product Register for Energy Labelling (EPREL) will provide more detailed information on all models available on the EU market. This will be accessible by scanning a QR code that will appear on the new energy labels, which each appliance must carry.
