We do not know how you went with the update of Windows 8.1, but some users are still struggling to update them, citing more and more mistakes that occurred during the download or installation process.
Several have reports problems with the Windows 8.1 setup just after the process is supposed to be preparing the devices for the new operating system.
The error says: “Could not update to Windows 8.1 – 0xC1900101 – 0x40017” that pops up out of the blue, with the installer, and then rolls back to the previous version of Windows.
One desperate user describes it problem:
"I have downloaded the Windows 8.1 update from the store, but I can not install it. Every time I try, I get to the point where the update "gets my devices ready", the computer restarts and a blue screen appears with the error message. It then tries to recover the installation, fails, and so on, then restores Windows 8. When the system starts after that, I get a message that says: Could not update to Windows 8.1. Sorry, we were unable to complete the Windows 8.1 update. We have restored the previous version of Windows to this computer. 0xC1900101 - 0x40017 “
A Microsoft support technician explained that the issue is caused by an error checker driver during the duration of the second boot and users are advised to check if all updates are installed on the computer.
Unfortunately, this solution makes no difference for most users, so they will have to wait for another better proposal.
