MS-DOS was renamed from the version of 86-DOS, written by Tim Paterson of Seattle Products and was first released in August 1980. Microsoft hired Paterson in May 1981, and purchased 86-DOS 1.10 for $75.000 in July. Soon after it was renamed MS-DOS. Microsoft released the first DOS-based version of Microsoft Word 1983 in 1983. In 1989, Word for Windows managed, within four years, to generate more than half the revenue of the global word processing application market.

"Thanks to Computer History Museum, these important pieces of source code will be preserved and made available to the public," said Microsoft CEO Roy Levin. .
