Η Harley-Davidson will unveil its first electric motorcycle next week, and President Matt Levatich said it expects the company which is known for its large touring motorcycles to become a leader in the development of technology and standards in electric vehicles.
Harley will show off hand-built models on Monday at an event in New York. Afterwards, the company with several dozen riders will tour 30 cities to test drive the new bikes. Harley will use the information gathered from this tour to improve them producthers.
That particular project carries several risks for Harley-Davidson as it is quite a pioneer. At the moment there is almost no market for electric motorcycles of the size we are used to knowing from the company. The electric two-wheelers sold each year are almost exclusively low-powered scooters aimed at the Chinese market. One analyst said such investment by a major manufacturer could help generate demand, and Levatich stressed in an interview with Associated Press that Harley has one for the long-term vision, regardless of immediate demand.
