The US Congress halted meetings last weekend without arranging for a replacement of the Patriot Act, which would end at midnight this Sunday.
As of today 14000 websites (the number is constantly increasing) started to block it access to Congress in protest.
The Patriot Act, and in particular paragraph 215, allows unlimited power to the National Security Service (NSA) to conduct mass surveillance and data call collection.
The Blackout was organized by a team called Race for the Future or Fight for the Future. Group members (including sites such as Reddit, το Yelp, και η Consumer Electronics Association) έχουν προσθέσει μια γραμμή κώδικα στις ιστοσελίδες τους που ανακατευθύνει τυχόν επισκέπτες που χρησιμοποιούν IP της Parliamentς ή της Γερουσίας σε μια σελίδα protest.
"Congress: This is a blackout," says the protest page. "We are blocking your access until you end mass surveillance laws."
And it continues:
"The real answer is to stop all mass surveillance authorities. Until you do, thousands of websites will block your access, and more will be done every day. ”
The team is also running a Twitter campaign and inviting people using the "#ifeelnaked" tag to present photos with little or no clothing.
The message they say is:
"Congress should be ashamed of its massive NSA surveillance. It's like a porn movie search, online. "
