What is OpenFace? Several companies are involved in the development of software and hardware that uses it technology facial recognition. The software developed is capable of distinguishing faces and emotions in real time.
But to date, these projects are proprietary. Will the Open Source community ever be able to keep up with the already advanced technology?
Researchers from the University Carnegie Mellon are developing an open-source facial recognition program based on research FaceNet Google (PDF).
It's called OpenFace, and its developers say it can recognize faces in real time using just 10 photos of the face.
Watch the video below to see the program in action:
Researchers say the results are very encouraging:
Data sets used are fewer than those used by industry face recognition applications, and the accuracy is extremely high and exceeds all other open source face recognition applications that we know and are based on the LFW reference standard.
Of course there is plenty of room for development but the open source facial recognition program, OpenFace seems to be on the right track.
