FBI Director James Comey revealed today that the FBI spent over a million dollars to crack the iPhone by Syed Farook. After nearly a month, the feds failed to discover anything significant on the device.
The phone, which was the cause of conflict between Apple and the FBI and occupied all the media the latter space, was ultimately of no value to the investigations as it contained no evidence that could link Farook to radical Islamic terrorist groups.
The FBI has always argued that unlocking Farook's phone could save lives of American citizens from future attacks.
But the effort infringements proved completely useless to her. And it cost a lot, a lot without bringing the desired results.
Mr. Comey did not directly report the price of the tool used for iPhone hack, but we can draw our own conclusion from the answer he gave to a question at a security conference held in London.
When asked how much FBI paid for the tool he used to unlock the device, Mr. Comey replied:
"A lot, more than I will get until I retire, that is, in seven years and four months, that is for sure."
The rest are just mathematics. Comey gets about 180.000 dollars a year, and his 7,3 years remain in service.
Total 1.3 million dollars.
