Smartphone addiction can cause discomfort, not only for the people who maintain it, but also for those around them. A study conducted in South Korea found that women are more prone to smartphone addiction, compared to men.
The study was conducted by Professor Chang Jae-yeon of Ajou University and is based on a survey of 1.236 students held in six schools in the country, according to the Korea Times.
The results showed that women are actually more dependent on smartphones than men, as opposed to popular beliefs.
The study reports that 52% of the women in the survey used the cell phones on their phones for four hours a day or more, while only 29,4% of men spend that much time checking their phones. 22,9% of women use their smartphones for six hours a day, double that compared to 10,8% of men.
Women use their mobile phones mainly to check social networking sites, mainly Facebook and Instagram.
This particular finding of the research is in line with some previous statistics that showed on Facebook there are more accounts women than men. And men use their smartphones during breaks, while 37,2% of women constantly check their mobile phones, even when talking to other people.
20,1% of the women who participated in the study said they felt extremely insecure when they could not use their smartphones while only 8,9% of men felt the same.
The study states that women's wishes for networking and communication are stronger than men, making them more vulnerable to reliance on social networking sites and their smartphones.
The study concluded that women's dependency is 10% higher, compared to men.
