Three years after its announcement, the US government has today commissioned the construction of Gerald R Ford at the Norfolk Naval Station in Virginia.
Ο Πρόεδρος Donald Trump helped deliver the USS Gerald R. Ford to Naval Station Norfolk today Saturday and said the state-of-the-art aircraft carrier will send a message "100.000 tons in the world" about America's military power finally growing.
The last aircraft carrier that will join the US fleet at some point costs 12,9 billionmillions dollars, and with delays due to defense cost overruns it will take at least four more years before it can actually become part of the US fleet.
There are plenty of challenges waiting for the new aircraft carrier, as tests and lots of construction still in the middle have to be completed.
In fact it will have to be resolved a major PDF problem (and not only) involving the launching and retrieval of aircraft, which is also the sole reason for the existence of aircraft carriers.
Gerald R Ford is one ship new generation of aircraft carriers. The first class was the Nimitz class built in 1975. Construction began in 2005 and the ship was commissioned as it is today in 2013.
The new Gerald R Ford aircraft carrier will be the most expensive warship ever built by the United States.
