Personally, for me it was challenge, curiosity and research and of course the search for new knowledge.
Slackware
The old Linux operating system is Slackware, and it's a bit hard to install, although it provides very good documentation on the installation disk, it installs a root system on its own and does not even require a connection to the internet.
Like Debian (and unlike simpler Linux operating systems like Mint), during the installation process you are given the option choiceof software package groups that you want to have by default, but also exclude other packages that you don't need.
The result is that you may need to know what each pack is doing and why it is needed.
Another feature that makes Slackware a little more difficult is that you need to create disk space manually using the fdisk or cfdisk command-line tool.
However, you are given many basic command-line tools to configure Slackware since it does not use a GUI as it does Debian.
Did you have a hard time? Compared to the following Linux operating systems, installing Slackware is a "toy."
NuTyX
The NuTyX Linux operating system is designed for users who want flexibility and power. This in itself should bang you if you are interested in easier distribution.
Unlike Arch, which from a point on the installation has a rudimentary graphical environment, you need to install it with a command line tool, first to separate your hard drive, and then to install.
Finishing with the NuTyX installation process you will have a very basic system to build it from scratch. Unlike Slackware, however, you will need to install all the other programs you need from the command line.
Gentoo
Of course, Linux distribution known for its difficult installation could not be missing from the list.
Like NuTyX, you need to know a lot about your system and Linux in general, along with the right tools you can use for the settings. In short, there is no installer and everything is done from the command line or terminal.
With Gentoo Linux the choice is yours. You will build exactly the system you want, without actually building it from scratch. That's one of the reasons Google's Chrome OS is based on Gentoo.
Please note that Gentoo documentation is excellent for every time you encounter a problem. The wiki of the distribution is very detailed, and the too many information they contain makes them hard to read.

Linux From Scratch (LFS)
Linux From Scratch (LFS) is not an operating system in itself. It provides those who use it with a way to build their own operating system. We can call it more of a "design" used to build the base.
So the Linux From Scratch (LFS) project gives the reader every step to make his own operating system.
