DNS for Everyone: Advantages and Disadvantages

DNS change can significantly improve your computer's defense against various online threats. It is one of the many advantages of using DNS servers.

If you are thinking of changing or using DNS and wondering which company to address below, we will mention five different options, with their main features and some drawbacks.internet cable - DNS for everyone: Advantages and disadvantages

Google Public DNS

IP Addresses: 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4

They are two of them best-known servers, owned by Google Public DNS.

Google's DNS has a significant advantage over others, which is speed. Overloading DNS often causes congestion which can slow down your browsing. According to a Google study, the biggest cause of bottlenecks are "cache failures".

Google is trying to mitigate this problem by offering three key performance features:

Worldwide coverage - There are servers nearby, no matter where you are in the world.
Prevent DoS Attacks: Google provides security with the DNSSEC standard
Load Balancing: Shared Caching improves the cache performance rate.

Disadvantage: While Google offers DNSSEC and DNS-over-HTTPS standards for more security, there is a significant security drawback to using the service: data collection.

You know Google is an advertising company and user data is its largest asset. Although the data it collects from DNS servers is theoretically impersonal, the company collects data.

OpenDNS

IP addresses: 208.67.220.220 and 208.67.222.222

Another one known provider DNS is OpenDNS. Since November of 2016, the service is owned by Cisco.

Users can choose three levels of service: OpenDNS Family Shield, OpenDNS Home and OpenDNS VIP Home.

The first two services, OpenDNS Family Shield and OpenDNS Home, are free of charge. Their features are almost the same. Both services have built-in protection for identity theft and parental control for every device in your home. The only significant difference is customizable filtering: Family Shield is pre-set while the Home package needs adjustments.

The VIP Home package has detailed statistics on how to use the internet but is not free of charge. The company also offers business packages.

Disadvantages: Unfortunately, the company stores information from DNS and IPs. It is also customary to use web beacons on the pages you visit using the servers to find out what content you are interested in.

DNS Watch

IP Addresses: 84.200.69.80 and 84.200.70.40

DNS Watch is one extremely safe DNS service. It is completely free for everyone and does not offer different packages like OpenDNS.

The service offers free of charge:

Neutrality (DNS): Servers do not censor DNS requests.

Privacy Protection: The company does not record DNS queries and generally does not record any of your actions, according to the company.

No data sold: The company has no business agreement with ad networks or other companies interested in learning your online habits.

No ISP DNS Hijacking: If you use your ISP's DNS servers, any of your browsing is collected and classified by your ISP. DNS Watch does not do that.

OpenNIC

IP Addresses: 206.125.173.29 and 45.32.230.225

The OpenNIC project is a well-known high-level network center. It offers an alternative to the typical top-level domain (TLD) like ICANN.

However, the company also provides free DNS servers. There are four servers to choose from. We write two with the best uptime (100 percent and 99,95 percent, respectively).

Once again, there are some basic security features to keep in mind. Like the DNS Watch service, it offers neutrality and prevention of abuse of DNS by ISPs. But it also provides some additional features.

First, you can choose how many data records are made by OpenNIC. It gives you an unprecedented level of control over your data.

Second, and perhaps more impressive, you can also vote on how OpenNIC works. You can talk about everything from making decisions about new TLDs to project policy changes.

UncensoredDNS

IP Addresses: 91.239.100.100 and 89.233.43.71

It is perhaps the least recognizable service in our list.
Η service which first operated by Dane Thomas Steen Rasmussen who describes the beginning of the service with his own words:

“I am a system administrator at a Danish internet provider, and I was born 1979. I manage this service as an individual with my own money. The DNS service consists of two non-encrypted DNS servers and is available for use by anyone, free of charge. ”

The best of the UncensoredDNS service is that both servers besides being completely free does not collect a data trace.

Both servers are naturally located in Denmark.

Which DNS servers are you using?

Which is the best service, hard to say and rather depends on what everyone is looking for. If you want parental control, please contact OpenDNS. If you want to improve your speed and do not care about recording your personal data, use Google. You want to be as discreet as possible, but maybe sacrifice speed, think of one of the last three options.

  • After Wind tricks (censorship in some addresses ξα I also changed the DNS)
So far I'm happy with OpenDNS (though I don't know how much I'm watching, but less than Google's and let's be faster).
Do we have to give IPv6 too ???? (however for OpenDNS it is::
    Recommended = 2620: 0: ccc :: 2
    Backup = 2620: 0: ccd :: 2)
