Ubuntu 18.04 LTS: Canonical CEO Mark Shuttleworth today unveiled the code name for the next LTS distribution of the Ubuntu Linux operating system. Ubuntu 18.04 LTS will be released in late April of 2018.
LTS for those who do not know comes from long-term support and refers to a type of special versions of software or operating systems designed to support a longer period of time.

Mark Shuttleworth did not reveal what the upcoming Ubuntu 18.04 LTS will bring, except that more emphasis will be put on Ubuntu Snappy Core for Internet of Things (IoT) devices. At the same time, the development program, which states that the release date for Ubuntu 18.04 LTS will be at 26 April 2018, was also posted.
The development starts in two days from today, that is, on October 26. From this date on, Ubuntu 18.04 LTS "Bionic Beaver" will follow the same path as its predecessors. This means that two Alpha and two Beta versions will be released during the six-month development cycle.
According to the release schedule, the first Alpha release is expected at 4 January 2018 and the second will be released in 1 in February, but only for opt-in flavors.
On 8 March, we will have the first beta release and the Final Beta will be released at 5 April 2018.
