Yes! New WPA3 Security Template: H Wi-Fi Alliance announcement, which are various device manufacturers, such as Apple, Microsoft and Qualcomm, announced the Monday 9 January, the next generation WPA3 wireless security model.
The standard will replace WPA2, a security protocol that has been around for almost two decades and is built for the protection almost every wireless device today, including phones, laptops, and Internet of Things (IoT) devices.
According to the Wi-Fi Alliance, devices that support WPA3 will later be released within 2018.
Devices must be WPA3 certified to be eligible for this feature; in other words, they must apply for and receive the signal.Wi-Fi CERTIFIED ™ WPA3 ™". So you'll probably start seeing this logo on new routers (routers) and other wireless devices from late 2018.
The Wi-Fi Alliance has not announced anything about whether existing devices will be able to support the new WPA3, but we should not wait for it because we will be disappointed.
Many devices could theoretically receive software updates or firmware for WPA3 support, but manufacturers would have to apply for WPA3 certification for their existing hardware before proceeding with these updates. This of course comes at a cost and most manufacturers will prefer to spend their resources on developing new devices rather than getting certifications for old ones.
Here, we should mention that even if you have a WPA3 router, you will need WPA3 compatible devices (laptop, phone and everything else connected to Wi-Fi) to take full advantage of this new security feature.
The good news is that the router can support both WPA2 and WPA3 security standards at the same time.
So, once WPA3 is released and it is not widespread, it will take a long transitional period in which some devices will connect to your new WPA2 router, while others will be connected to WPA3.
When all of your devices will support WPA3, you will be able to disable WPA2 on your router to improve security, as you can disable any obsolete WPA and WEP security standards and only use WPA2 connections on your router today.
Although it will take some time for WPA3 to be fully developed, the important thing is that the procedure transition starts in 2018. Let's see when it will be completed...
