The openSUSE Project was released today the openSUSE Leap operating system 15. The new operating system is based on the upcoming SUSE Enterprise Linux 15 series and features updated components and technologies designed for power users.
The OpenSuSE Leap 15 operating system has all the features that users and IT professionals need, such as the ability to upgrade from openSUSE Leap 15 to SUSE Linux Enterprise 15 when it is released later this year.
The transition to SUSE Linux Enterprise 15 is for system administrators seeking long-term support, and all the necessary credentials an operating system needs.
The characteristics of the new openSUSE Leap 15 operating system include a new partitioner built into the installer, integration with the Kopano open-source groupware application suite, Firewalld as a firewall management tool, new “server” and “transactional server” roles for file management , Cloud optimizations and a new look aligned with the SUSE Linux Enterprise look.
OpenSUSE Leap 15 comes with an improved YaST as well as an AutoYaST for automatic updates.
The distribution wears the Linux 4.12 kernel, and comes with desktops KDE Plasma 5.12 LTS and GNOME 3.26. Standard apps come in the following versions:
Libre Office 6.0, Mozilla Firefox 60, Mozilla Thunderbird 52, VLC 3.0, OpenSSL 1.1.0, PHP 7, and systemd 234.
Existing openSUSE Leap users can update directly to openSUSE Leap 15, but to get the new apps, you'll need to download the installation image you're interested in from the links below. The new openSUSE Leap 15 works only on architecture 64-bit (x86_64), but is expected to support ARM64 (AArch64) and POWER architectures soon. The openSUSE Leap 15 series will receive security updates over the next three years.
