Facebook has announced that it is preparing a new cooling system for centers data which can handle much more extreme conditions.
The system StatePoint Liquid Cooling (SPLC) the company was developed by Nortek Air Solutions and allows Facebook to place data centers in places where direct cooling is not possible.
According to Facebook, the SPLC system can reduce water usage more than 20% in data centers in hot and humid climates and by 90% in cooler areas.
The comparisons of Facebook have as reference the previous indirect cooling systems. Facebook's instant cooling systems can reduce water usage by half compared to standard data centers.
The following list includes some details about the SPLC:
SPLC produces cold water instead of cold air.
Facebook and Nortek develop SPLC 2015.
The system uses a liquid energy exchanger in air where water is cooled as it evaporates through a separating membrane.
Cold water is used to cool the air in the data center.
The membrane prevents "contamination" between water and air streams and requires minimal maintenance.
The SPLC has three functions that are used to optimization of water and energy consumption with base outside temperatures.
The system is designed in a way that simplifies piping in a data center.
One of the biggest advantages of the SPLC system is that it will allow Facebook to use more and more different sites for its data centers.
So while Microsoft, Amazon, Facebook, Google and many others compete for the best data center space (often in the same locations), the largest social network will be able to use alternative locations having better rates.
