Microsoft and Linux continue to live their love life, which is confirmed by the announcement of SUSE that it has developed a custom Linux kernel specifically for Microsoft Azure.
The kernel is said to improve the speed ofmovementof SUSE Linux Enterprise Server & Hosting (SLES) 15 in Azure platform parameters.
The new kernel also allows those running SLES on Azure to use the latest platform technology, such as Accelerated Networking with SR-IOV and Write Accelerator.
"We've worked closely with SUSE to ensure that our customers using SUSE Linux Enterprise Server have the best experience with Microsoft Azure," said Ky Srinivasan, CEO of Microsoft Open Source.
SUSE, on the other hand, states that if you run it SLES 15 in Azure there will be up to 25 percent faster network performance, and a 23 percent reduction in average latency compared to older versions.
From beforechoice, SLES 15 instances in Azure will only run with the custom kernel, but any administrator who wishes can switch kernels using the Zypper package manager.
Let's mention that Microsoft supports many to date distributions Linux on Azure: CentOS, CoreOS, Debian, Oracle Linux, RHEL, SUSE Linux Enterprise Server (SLES), openSUSE and Ubuntu.
The current relationship between Microsoft and Linux has nothing to do with 2001, when then-CEO Steve Ballmer said Linux was a "cancer."
With the current CEO of the company Satya Nadella we have witnessed a great love… that no one knows how far it will go: Microsoft loves Linux since 2014.
