Windows 10 celebrated its third anniversary in July, but despite Microsoft's occasional aggressive promotion, Windows 7 continues to be the flagship operating system worldwide.
This shows its statistics NetMarketShare, which proves that Windows 7 remains a strong opponent, despite the fact that it is approaching the operating support fee.
Meanwhile, Windows 10 is constantly being developed with two major feature updates released each year. So naturally Windows fans have a very good incentive to install Windows 10 since it is a version which offers new features twice a year.
According to Microsoft, this strategy works. Every month, more and more systems are updated to the latest version of Windows 10, and previous releases are being abandoned.
The following data shows how many Windows 10 installed in the last 12 months (until July of 2018). Windows 10 April 2018 Update seems to be in the top three months only after their release.
In July, the April 2018 Update version was installed on 68% of Windows Window 10 computers, while Fall Creators Update is second with 18%. Only 14% of devices still use an earlier Windows 10 update.
These numbers indicate that Microsoft's strategy is working and that Windows 10 users usually update their computers very quickly. But there are also those who prefer an older version of the operating system.
The chart below from the NetMarketShare data shows that the biggest Windows 10 headache is not currently Linux or macOS, but an operating system from 2009.
Windows 7 survived the release of Windows 10 despite Microsoft's aggressive practices, although the company has repeatedly announced that no one will be able to receive security updates after January 2020.
Judging by the data, when Windows 10 loses users, Windows 7 increases their market share, and when Windows 7 falls, Windows 10 is gaining in numbers. This indicates that some users moved from one version to another in a rather short period.
Here we have to mention that the performance of Window 10 is not stable and as growth continues, it seems to be an event that we should accept.
Of course, Windows 10 will soon overcome Windows 7, but this does not mean that 7 will disappear. Windows 7, on the other hand, will probably become the new Windows XP, and it will probably take another decade to disappear altogether.
There are you see some who prefer stability to an ever-evolving operating system and every update is a roll…
