Cinnamon 4.0: Cinnamon is the Linux Mint interface. It started out as a fork of Gnome 3, and is now fully independent.
Cinnamon DE (desktop environment) brings modern technologies to Linux while maintaining the classical desktop line we know from Windows, with the taskbar, application menu, and traditional window management.
Now Cinnamon 4.0 has been released. Let's see what new brings:
The desktop environment Cinnamon 4.0 comes with a specialized interface, and a new layout of the panel layout.
The new panel is a modern gadget with a new window list, window grouping and window previews. The modern version of the panel includes the following characteristics:
- Icons on 40px
- Icons of 24px on the system tray
- Windows that are grouped by application
Cinnamon 4.0 users will be able to specify a different size for the icons.
It is worth noting that Linux Mint 19.1 will allow the user to choose between the traditional panel and the modern Cinnamon 4.0 gadget.
If you are using Cinnamon with another Linux distribution, you can replace the gadget manually from the panel options control.
Vsync removed: The feature prevents screen tearing, but at a cost in performance. This cost is visible in previous versions of Cinnamon when you drag a window with the mouse. As you move the mouse pointer to the left and right, you will notice that the window does not move exactly with the mouse but with a slight delay.
Removing Vsync fixes things after there is no longer a delay. Windows react directly and fully respond.
More improvements:
Nemo 4 comes with significant performance improvements. Navigating the folders is now faster and this is immediately felt.
The app comes with improved icon sizes and spacing to display better.
Nemo is now able to display file creation times (this requires ext4, and kernel 4.15 or larger version. The feature does not work in encrypted folders).
Nemo's options were moved to a new widget in libxapp called XappStackSideBar.
Those who use Linux Mint and Ubuntu distributions can install the update directly from the following ppa.
