Η Microsoft has just released a free AV1 video codec for devices running Windows 10. The new codec is available for free from the Microsoft Store as part of an early beta program.
Codec is available for PC, Surface Hub and HoloLens, according to the company, but it can only be installed on devices running the latter Windows 10 October 2018 Update.
Let's remind you that this version has withdraw from the traffic as it presented and presents many and important errors.
Microsoft states that while the codec will work normally on Windows 10, there is a chance that minor system performance issues may occur when playing AV1 videos. But (if you're reassured) Microsoft has promised to improve the codec in the next ones updates.
This is premature release, and you may see some performance problems when playing AV1 video. We continue to improve this expansion. If you allow your apps to automatically update, you will receive the latest updates and enhancements when we release them.
