Microsoft today announced the release of a preview version of its browser Edge Chromium for devices running Windows 7, 8 and 8.1.
The browser Microsoft Edge Chromium-based uses the same kernel used by Google Chrome and other browsers such as Vivaldi, Opera and Brave.
Microsoft originally released it Browser for functional of the Windows 10 system, but was later released for Apple devices as well. As of today, it is officially released for Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 operating systems. There is currently no version released for Linux distributions.
Microsoft's current strategy seems to focus not only on Windows 10, although it was initially used to make the upgrade to Windows much more attractive.
Downloads are already available at official webpage Microsoft Edge Insider. Just visit the page and click the download button next to the operating system you want to install Edge.
Currently only the version from the Canary Channel for Windows 7 and 8.1 operating systems. Canary is the version under active development. The Dev Channel version only exists for Windows 10, and soon the first versions will be released to the Beta Channel, which has no version to date.
Microsoft says the experience for older platforms is "largely the same" as for Windows 10, and that features such as the upcoming Internet Explorer emulation feature will be available on devices running Windows 7 and 8.1.
The new Microsoft Edge browser differs in many opinions from Chrome and other Chromium-based browsers. It has some extensions that are only available for this browser, and it will also support Google Chrome extensions.
Microsoft has not yet revealed the release date of the new version of the new browser.
