Notepad: updates through the Windows Store

Microsoft continues to update the Notepad app. Every updated of Windows 10 includes more improvements to Notepad.

So now the application that Microsoft had forgotten for many years, supports Unix-style writing, Bing searches and performance improvements.

So the company plans to update Notepad much faster.

This change is part of Windows Insider build 18963. It will be officially released with the Windows 10 20H1 update sometime in April 2020.

Until then, Notepad will be updated normally via Windows Update.

Microsoft's Dona Sarkar and Brandon LeBlanc explain the change in a post on blog:

Notepad has been a much-loved text editor on Windows for over 30 years. Over the course of recent releases, we've made some minor improvements to Notepad with your comments. Starting with this build, the future ones of Notepad to be automatically available through the Store. This will give us the flexibility to answer issues and get feedback outside of the confines of Windows versions. As always, if you have anything to tell us about Notepad, we welcome it in the Feedback Center under Apps > Notepad.

This is a big change: Will Notepad change so often that Microsoft needs to update more often than every six months? Obviously, he will!

Plus with the new build you will be able to uninstall Notepad! Just right click on the s and select “Uninstall”. If Notepad is uninstalled and you try to start it, you will get a prompt saying “Notepad is not installed”. This prompt takes you to the Microsoft Store, where you can reinstall it.

Although it may come as a surprise, we should expect it if we look at recent developments. More and more applications have been moved from Windows to the Store.

Η new application of Windows for example, released through the Store and the new Chromium-based Edge browser will also be updated through the Store more often than every six months.
