Microsoft has unveiled a new security feature called Tamper Protection as part of Windows Defender Antivirus, the December of 2018.
Tamper Protection, as the name implies, protects certain security features from tampering. One of the drawbacks of Tamper Protection is that it prevents changes to settings made outside the official Windows 10 Settings application.
So if some attackers try to disable your operating system protections in real time or some security features Tamper Protection is designed to prevent them.
Microsoft didn't say much about this feature when it released 2018 in December, but a new post on blog company reports that the security feature is available on all Windows 10 Home installations that are running the current Windows 10 update (1903).
Before, Tamper Protection was only available for businesses, but it seems Microsoft decided to make it available on all Home systems as well.
It's worth mentioning that Tamper Protection protects your operating system from the cloud in real time, by detecting suspicious files, tracking any behavior and security updates, including Microsoft's.
Microsoft corporate clients can configure Tamper Protection through Microsoft Intune. Home Edition users can find the setting in the Windows 10 security application.
Microsoft says this feature is evolving over time with the systems. So there are some users who can see the new option, while others may not yet see it.
To enable or disable the new feature in Home versions of Windows 10:
Make sure the version of your operating system is Windows 10 1903 or some later version.
Use the two Windows I keys to open the Settings application.
Select Update & Security - Windows Security.
Click on "Windows Security"
Select Antivirus and Threat Settings.
You will see the Tamper Protection feature. Just turn the function on or off.
You can also enable the feature from the Registry.
Open Registry Editor (search for regedit) and follow the path:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows Defender\Features
Find the TamperProtection setting and set the value to 0 (off) or 1 (enabled). Then you will have to restart your system or log off and log back in for the protection to work.
