How to set the minimum PIN length for BitLocker

The BitLocker feature of Windows can even encrypt the operating system drive, as well mentioned in this guide.

If your system has a TPM (Trusted Platform Module) installed, you can set the PIN to unlock a disk. If you do not have a TPM installed, you can enable BitLocker operate without TPM compatible and using the traditional password.

In this article, we will look at how to set the minimum length for this PIN. Don't confuse it Hello PIN. The wizard refers to the PIN used to encrypt and decrypt a drive with BitLocker.

Especially if you have encrypted the drive that is running the operating system with BitLocker, then you will be prompted for this PIN when you start the computer. And while it should not be simplistic but on the other hand you should be able to memorize it easily.

1. Because you will mess up the registry, first backup it. Once you have finished, press Win + R at the same time and in the "Run" window, type regedit and press OK. The Registry Editor will open.

2. In the left pane of the Registry Editor, go to the following registry key:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ Software \ Policies \ Microsoft \ FVE

3. If FVE does not exist, just create it. (Right-click Microsoft, select Create> Key. Name the newly created subkey as FVE).

Now in the right pane of the FVE registry key (HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Policies \ Microsoft \ FVE), right-click and select Create> DWORD Value (32 bit). Even if you are running 64 bit Windows you will still choose 32 bit. Name the newly created DWORD as MinimumPIN. Double-click MinimumPIN to modify its Value Data:

4. The default value for this DWORD is 6, which means that the minimum PIN length for BitLocker must be 6. You can set the price data from 6 to 20 on a decimal basis, depending on your requirements. Put the number of your choice. Click OK. Turn off Registry Editor and restart for the changes to take effect.

The next time you encrypt a drive with BitLocker you will be prompted to enter a PIN at least the MinimunPIN number.
