The official application Firefox-VPN for Android is available for download, even if the VPN service itself is still offered through a closed invitational program.
Firefox VPN is a service that Mozilla is betting on for increased revenue, as it will be offered to subscribers for $ 4,99 a month. A monthly subscription gives you access to servers in more than 30 countries, according to Mozilla, and allows VPN connections to up to 5 devices.
But for now all you can do is join a waiting list and hope Mozilla sends you an invite, which you can use to activate your account in the Android app or Windows 10.
VPN is a critical part of Mozilla's efforts to find more revenue streams and increase revenue. Earlier this year, the company admitted that its financing plans did not work out exactly as expected, but stated that it would continue to invest in this area.
But Mozilla laid off dozens employees in an effort to reduce its expenses.
"You may remember that we expected to earn more revenue in 2019 and 2020 from new subscription products but also to have higher revenue in addition to search engines. That did not happen. Our plan for 2019 did not calculate correctly how long it would take for the development and launch of new products that would generate revenue. "As we all learned in 2019 about the pace of innovation, we decided to take a more conservative approach to our revenue in 2020. We also agreed not to spend more than we earn in the future," said Mozilla President and interim CEO Mitchell Baker .
For Firefox VPN now, there is still no release date, but since the Android app has just been released, Mozilla will probably accept more users on program throughout the year.
