Windows File Recovery: Recovers files from Microsoft

Microsoft has created Windows File Recovery, a file recovery tool for , but he seems to have forgotten to announce it and hardly anyone knows.

Everyone has accidentally deleted a file and then realized to their surprise that they hadn't kept any copies . In this case users resort to third-party solutions to recover (if it is still possible) deleted files.

But Microsoft has made one too program, called Windows File Recovery, only that almost no one knows, since the company did not announce it or even made a single mention of it.

Windows File Recovery states that it is a file recovery program that allows you to recover deleted files on your hard disk, USB drive, and even SD card.

We read from the description of the tool:
"Has an important file been deleted by mistake? Did you clean your hard drive? Not sure what to do with corrupted data? Windows File Recovery can help you recover your personal data.

Microsoft Windows File Recovery Tool supports three ways s: “Default”, “Segment”, and “Signature”.

Each of these ways tries to recover deleted files from a storage in a different way, as described below.

  • Default Mode: This mode uses the Master File Table (MFT = File Table) to locate lost files. The default function works well when there are MFT and file sections, also called file recording sections (FRS).
  • Segment Mode: This mode does not require MFT but requires segments. Segmets are summaries of file information that NTFS stores in MFT, such as , date, size, type and the index of cluster / allocation units.
  • Signature Mode: This feature only requires data to exist and searches for specific file types. Does not work for small files. To retrieve a file on an external storage device, such as a USB drive, you can only use the Signature function.

To try it you must first download it from here and install it. When the program is installed it will act as a command line tool called winfr.exe. That is, you can work with it by opening a Command Prompt window  with administrator rights.

In the command prompt window, type the word winfr and press enter to see a list of available tool commands. Winfr also includes advanced options, which you can view by typing winfr /! .

These advanced options, listed below, allow you to refine the recovery process by specifying the areas to scan, how to perform the recovery, and disabling specific file extensions.

The standard Windows File Recovery command includes the drive to search for deleted files, the drive to save them, and any which will improve the file recovery function.

For example, to use the "» function to recover all deleted .JPG files from D: drive and restore them to F: drive, you should type the following command:

winfr D: F: / n * .JPG

To use the “default” mode to recover all deleted files of type *.PNG, from the folder E:\, you should type the command:

winfr E: F: / n \ temp \ *. PNG

We do not know or have any reports on how well this tool works. If you try it, give us your comments on its effectiveness.

If you do not do your job and have a real need to recover your deleted files, you can have better success using third-party tools such as Photorec or Recuva or R-Studio and many more.
