The Food and Drug Administration of USA (Food and Drug Administration or simply FDA) issued on Friday a license to use extraordinary need for a product that can test people without symptoms of covid-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus.
This authorization, which is the first for this type of test aims to allow everyone from a test for covid-19 even if there are no symptoms of the disease.
The test is a real-time PCR test and he managed to get an emergency permit. The test is being developed by LabCorp and was initially licensed by the FDA in mid-March for use only by people suspected of having covid-19.
However, this reissued license allows the LabCorp product to be used for testing by anyone. The FDA said it was extending the use of the LabCorp test after the company provided data demonstrating the test's ability to detect SARS-CoV-2 in a general, asymptomatic population.
According to the FDA, data provided by LabCorp confirms that the test is as accurate when used in the asymptomatic population as in individuals suspected of having covid-19.
