Windows 10 20H2: BSoD after chkdsk command

Reports indicate that running the chkdsk command may cause in the file system which will result in a blue screen of death (BSoD) on the first system reboot after the disk check operation is complete.

Günter Born reported the problem with more details on his blog.

It states that an administrator discovered ( german forum) the problem after upgrading systems to Windows 10 version 20H2 and running chkdsk c:/f after installing the update.

The command checks drive c: for errors and fixes them immediately, if any.

The devices encountered an NTFS File System error on reboot. THE of an active device, which had a disk check done, showed that the partition where Windows was installed appeared as a RAW partition, suggesting that the chkdsk command repair corrupted the NTFS file system.

Further analysis provided the following information:

  • Systems running Windows 10 20H2 appear to be affected.
  • The issue seems to be affecting Solid State Drives but one user reported that a VM on a regular hard drive was also affected.
  • The cumulative update KB4592438, released on Patch Tuesday, December 8, 2020, seems to be the cause of the issue.

It is not clear if all Windows 10 20H2 devices are affected or if the problem is only with devices with certain features. It has been confirmed that no new installation of Windows 10 in version 20H2 is affected.

So administrators should back up their Windows partition before running the Check Disk command on Windows 10 20H2 devices that have December 2020 updates installed.

Microsoft has not yet confirmed the problem.
