Save passwords to Google without Sync in Chrome

29/12/2020 22:44 by giorgos

How do you save one-page passwords to your Google Account when sync is off?

Google Chrome can sync your passwords, bookmarks, and browsing history with built-in Sync. This, however, requires that you have sync enabled and, of course, logged in to your Google Account with your browser.

Google is preparing to change this mode of operation. For stored passwords, the company makes an exception. So you can now turn off sync, save, and sync saved site passwords between your devices. The new feature will allow you to move locally stored passwords to your Google Account and then use them later when prompted.

Here's how to save passwords to your Chrome account while Sync is off.

This requires Chrome Canary at this time, as Google has not yet added the new feature to the stable version.

Open Chrome and open the internal address:

chrome://flags#passwords-account-storage

Select Enabled for Enable the account data storage for passwords.

Then open the address:

chrome://flags#passwords-account-storage-iph

Select Enabled for Enable IPH to store account data for passwords (Enable IPH for account data storage for passwords)

Then open the address:

chrome://flags/#enable-autofill-account-wallet-storage.

Select Enabled for Enable the account data storage for autofill.

Restart Google Chrome.

To test the feature turn off sync from settings (chrome: // settings / people)

Sign in to Chrome again, as disabling sync will disconnect you and make sure sync is turned off.

Click Settings - Autofill.
Click on Passwords.
Click View and manage passwords on this device (See and manage passwords on this device)
On the next page you will see the locally saved passwords. You will be able to use the new Move to Google Account setting.
This will allow passwords to be stored in a Google Account even when synchronization is turned off.

Also, when you choose to save a password, the browser will ask you if you want to save it to your Account or locally.
