CloudLinux, a company that has long established an RHEL clone for web hosting and server companies, has announced that it will also create a new CentOS distribution clone, AlmaLinux. The new distribution is now available as a beta.
While Red Hat has tried to please frustrated CentOS users with new free versions of RHEL for developers and small teams, many other users are still looking for alternatives. Here comes the AlmaLinux distribution.
The AlmaLinux operating system is a community RHEL, Linux fork. The CloudLinux distribution supports AlmaLinux with an annual sponsorship of $ 1 million and promises that this first release based on RHEL 8.x will be supported by at least 2029. The new distribution is community-based to fill the gap left by its withdrawal fixed version of CentOS.
“As promised, the main development and maintenance was done by team of CloudLinux. We are now appealing to the community for their contributions,” said CloudLinux founder and CEO Igor Seletskiy.
“In the spirit of the community initiative, we need help with testing, documentation, support and planning the future roadmap.”
The AlmaLinux distribution is being developed with cooperation of the community via its GitHub page. The finalized source codes will be availableas soon as the stable version is released.
AlmaLinux beta comes with its own debugger. CloudLinux developers will work closely with bug tickets to ensure they can deliver an extremely stable distribution. Registered users will be able to submit bug reports that will be checked and prioritized by the technical team.
