2025 when 1984 became normal

As the new Bundesliga football season begins on Friday, the German Police Union (GdP) is calling for increased surveillance at match venues. What is needed is a “more intensive, legally compliant use of modern security technology,” such as automated facial recognition software and body scanners.

As at the airport, at least some fans will first have to undergo a full-body scan to detect weapons, fireworks or explosives, as required by the association. Before the opening match, GdP national president Jochen Kopelke said : “There is no place in the stadium for hooligans who are ready to use violence.”

In general, the GdP expects “consistent cooperation between federations, clubs, interior ministries and security companies to return to a safe football experience” after several incidents.

Let's mention that if this news had been circulating a decade ago, anonymity and privacy organizations would have taken to the streets...

Privacy is supposedly protected by the Constitution of every democratic state, but the reality is completely different when it comes to exercising the right. The protection of anonymity and privacy proves to be a utopia in the face of the threat of lifting protection for reasons of national or personal security.

State security and individual freedom do not seem to go hand in hand in the “rule of law” that every democracy prides itself on existing.

The attack on the Twin Towers in September 2001 brought about enormous changes in US legislation. Immediately afterwards, repeated terrorist attacks in Europe shaped corresponding legislation within the framework of European human rights law.

So in the year 2025 we have reached the era where we consider George Orwell 's 1984 to be completely normal and often necessary, before we try to get the knife to the bone.

With every incident of violence on the pitch, we "discover" that some club boards protect criminal and dangerous behavior, not to mention that they sometimes seek it out and even reward it.

So the solution for this is obviously facial recognition software.
