28% of Americans trust the media

Americans' trust in the media has fallen to a new low, with just 28% of respondents reporting "a great deal" or "somewhat" trust in newspapers, television and radio for reporting the news in a complete, accurate and fair manner, according to Gallup.

This percentage (28%) is lower than the 31% that existed last year and the 40% that existed five years ago.

Meanwhile, seven in 10 adults in the US now report having “not much” (36%) or “not at all” trust (34%).

When Gallup began measuring trust in the media in the 1970s, 68% to 72% of Americans expressed trust in journalism.

However, by the next measurement in 1997, public trust had fallen to 53%.

Trust in the media remained just above 50% until it fell to 44% in 2004, and has not risen to the majority level since then.

The highest reading in the last decade was 45% in 2018, which came just two years after trust collapsed amid the divisive 2016 election campaign.
