August 25th was Linux's 32nd birthday. On the 25th of August 1991, 21-year-old Finnish student Linus Benedict Torvalds made it famous now his announcement in the comp.os.minix newsgroup.
He mentioned that he is working on a free operating system for 386(486) AT clones, as a "hobby."

It has been 32 years since he made this announcement and he probably never dreamed that his so-called “hobby” would turn into something so huge and be used by millions of computer users around the world.
Hi everyone out there using minix –
I'm making a (free) OS (just a hobby, won't ehfiberι μεγάλο και επαγγελματικό όπως το gnu) για κλώνους 386(486) AT. Ετοιμάζεται από τον Απρίλιο. Θα ήθελα κάθε ανατροφοδότηση σχετικά με πράγματα που αρέσουν/αντιπαθούν οι άνθρωποι στο minix, καθώς το λειτουργικό σύστημα μου μοιάζει κάπως με αυτό (η ίδια physics file system layout (for practical reasons) among others).
I have currently ported bash(1.08) and gcc(1.40) and things seem to be working. That means I'll be getting something hands-on in a few months, and I'd love to know what features most of you would like. Any suggestions are welcome, but I don't promise to implement them 🙂
Linus
POSTSCRIPT. Yes – it's free of any minix code and has multi-threaded fs. It is NOT portable (uses 386 task switching etc), and will probably never support anything other than AT hard drives, as that's all I have :-(.
Hello everybody out there using minix -
I'm doing a (free) operating system (just a hobby, won't be big and professional like gnu) for 386(486) AT clones. This has been brewing since april, and is starting to get ready. I'd like any feedback on things people like/dislike in minix, as my OS resembles it somewhat (same physical layout of the file-system (due to practical reasons) among other things).
I've currently ported bash(1.08) and gcc(1.40), and things seem to work. This implies that I'll get something practical within a few months, and I'd like to know what features most people would want. Any suggestions are welcome, but I won't promise I'll implement them 🙂

PS. Yes – it's free of any minix code, and it has a multi-threaded fs. It is NOT portable (uses 386 task switching etc), and it probably never will support anything other than AT-harddisks, as that's all I have :-(.

Today, Linux is all around us, from Android smartphones, Wi-Fi routers, smart assistants and smart refrigerators, to TVs, satellites and airplanes.
Linux even powers the entire Internet, the Top 500 Supercomputers the world, Wall Street, even the iss (International Space Station).
