381,114 million euro investment in Greece for 4G

Rights for the use of radio frequencies for 15 years in the 800MHz and 2,6GHz spectral areas have been enforced by the three mobile networks.

Rights to use radio frequencies for 15 years in the spectrum areas of 800MHz - part of which will be freed until the end of 2014 with the transition from analog to digital television - and 2,6GHz were registered on October 13, 2014 by the three mobile networks operating in .

COSMOTE secured the largest portion paying more than 134 million euros for the rights until 2030, with to follow with an investment of 124,5 million in 4G and Wind Hellas with 121,8 million for the development of a 4G/LTE network.

  • COSMOTE: Two (2 × 5 MHz) sections in the band 800 MHz and eight (six 2 × 5 MHz and two 10 MHz) segments in the 2600 MHz band, with a total cost of 134.788.000 Euro.
  • VODAFONE-PANAFON: Two (2 × 5 MHz) sections in the band 800 MHz and six (four 2 × 5 MHz and two 10 MHz) sections in the 2600 MHz band, with a total cost of 124.501.000 Euro.
  • WIND: Two (2 × 5 MHz) sections in the band 800 MHz and four (2 × 5 MHz) sections in the 2600 MHz band, totaling EUR 121.825.000.

The auction in the 800 and 2600 MHz bands began on Monday 13 October 2014 for the commercial exploitation and development of innovative 4G / LTE services in mobile broadband. It concerned three radio frequency segments in the 800 MHz band and eighteen radio frequency segments in the 2600 MHz band. The 800 MHz band is part of the "digital dividend", that is, the spectrum released by the transition from analogue to digital television technology.

The competition was designed and implemented by EETT, with its own means, in a manner consistent with the current European regulatory framework and in particular with the revised Framework and Licensing Directives for networks and services (2002/21/EC and 2002/20/EC respectively). With the auction, EETT's project, which began in May 2013, for the distribution of the digital dividend, was completed.

According to the Authority, "The granting of rights of use for radio frequencies in the 800 and 2600 MHz bands is a very decisive step for the development of new wireless technologies for fourth generation mobile networks4G), που υποστηρίζουν καινοτόμες υπηρεσίες επικοινωνίας, πρόσβασης, περιεχομένου και μεταφοράς ευρυζωνικών δεδομένων. Ενίσχυση ταχυτήτων και κάλυψης από το 4G της COSMOTE

In detail, COSMOTE affirmed:

  • 2 2 × 5 MHz spectral divisions in the 791-821MHz and 832-862MHz zoning bands instead of a total price of 103 million.
  • 6 2 × 5 MHz spectral divisions in the 2500-2570MHz and 2620-2690MHz frequency bands, instead of a total price of 28,212 million.
  • 2 Unshared Spectrum Fragments 10 MHz in the 2575-2615MHz Frequency Band, instead of a total price of 3,576 million.

The above parts are assigned to COSMOTE up to 28.2.2030

The cost of acquiring the spectrum is in addition to the 1,2 billion investment made by OTE Group in Greece for the four-year 2014-2017, mainly in fixed and mobile New Generation networks.

Today, COSMOTE's 4G network is available in more than 60% of the country's population, and the company's goal is to provide 70% population coverage by the end of 2014. With the new spectrum, COSMOTE says it will "further enhance the speed and coverage of its extensive 4G network, both in urban and rural areas, meeting its customers' needs for ultra-high speeds and advanced communication."

The Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the OTE Group, Mr. Michalis Tsamaz, "Our priority is our customers' needs. Our new high investment, amounting to 135 million, in a range, allows us to further enhance the services we offer them. We are strengthening our networks, offering even more qualitative experience, especially on the 4G network. We are by far the largest telecom investor in Greece. This is confirmed today by investing the largest amount among the companies that participated in the auction. Investing in telecommunications is an investment in the development of the economy and the country. "

Expansion of Vodafone's 4G network and a better 4G mark on buildings

Vodafone invested 124.501.000 euro to ensure spectrum in the same bands, 800 MHz and 2600 MHz. Specifically, Vodafone acquired a new range of 2 × 10 MHz at 800 MHz and 2 × 20 MHz (coupled) and 20 MHz (unbeatable) at 2600 MHz. It will also take advantage of it to extend its 4G network coverage, as well as further improve the quality of the 4G signal indoors.

In November 2011 Vodafone renewed and expanded the range of mobile communications frequencies in a corresponding EETT competition, ensuring spectrum in the 900 MHz band as well as in the 1800 MHz band, to further extend the 2G and 3G services to its subscribers, for the acquisition of which has paid 168,5 million.

Mr. Glafkos Perissianis, President and CEO of Vodafone Greece stated in this regard: "This investment gives us the opportunity to take advantage of new opportunities arising from the expansion of the frequency range. At the same time, we contribute in practice to the development of the Greek economy and we prove our commitment to continue to provide our customers with technologically innovative services, fast and reliable communication ".

Development of the 4G / LTE network by WIND

WIND Hellas paid in total 121, 825 million and acquired rights for two segments (2 x 10 MHz) in the 800MHz band and also for four segments (2 x 20MHz) in the 2600MHz band. The new range will be utilized immediately as the company has already started to develop a new generation (4G) mobile network in the country using LTE technology.

"We will integrate the new spectrum into the modernization of our network and the current development of next generation mobile telephony services. By making this significant investment, we have acquired a critical reach that will enable us to respond to growing consumer demand for mobile broadband services and to provide our customers with the highest speeds in data services, "said WIND Hellas President and Chief Executive Officer, Nassos Zarkalis. "At the same time, we are promoting our market competitiveness and strengthening the value of our shareholders' investment in the company."
