64% increase in ransomware attacks in Greece!

Check Point Research (CPR), its Threat Intelligence division Check Point Software Technologies Ltd., a global provider of cyber security solutions, publishes new data on cyber attacks from the third quarter of this year.

A key finding is that the healthcare industry was the most targeted by ransomware in the third quarter of 2022, with one in 42 organizations affected by ransomware, a 5% year-over-year increase.

Check Point Research (CPR), in its Q2022 XNUMX cyberattack survey, found that healthcare is the industry most affected by ransomware. Ransomware gangs have focused their attention on hospitals, mainly because of the intense pressure on them to cover similar cases.

CPR is warning healthcare organizations to remain vigilant as the end of the year approaches and we enter the festive season, so hacker attacks increase during off-hours when security is considered less intense. Check Point Research also presents in this report global statistics for overall cyberattacks and by region, with the education/research sector and Asia leading the way as the top targets for total cyberattacks.

  • The education/research sector received the most of all cyberattacks in Q3, with an average of 2.148 attacks per organization each week, an 18% increase compared to Q2021 XNUMX
  • Asia experienced the highest volume of cyber attacks with 1778
  • weekly attacks per organization on average
  • 28% increase in global cyber attacks compared to the same period in 2021

The domains affected by Ransomware the most

  1. Healthcare (1 in 42 organizations affected by ransomware, up 5% annually)
  2. Managed Service Providers (1 in 43 organizations affected, 25% year-over-year decline)
  3. Finance/Banking (1 in 49 organizations affected by ransomware, up 17% from last year.
  4. The Retail/Wholesale industry has seen the largest year-over-year increase in ransomware attacks, up 4,39% since Q2021 XNUMX.

Konstantina Koukou, Channel Account Manager & Evangelist, at Check Point Software, commented on this:

"According to the data of Check Point Research (CPR) global cyber attacks have increased by 28% in the third quarter of 2022 compared to the same period of the previous year. However, it is interesting that in Greece, for the same period, attacks increased by 64% compared to the previous year recording an average of 813 attacks per week on organizations.”

"Trying to interpret the cause of this increase, we must not overlook the fact that there is a particularly increased activity of cyber attacks associated with the Russia-Ukraine war that may also affect Greece. However, I think the main reason is that attack groups around the world have acquired special dynamics and the right tools to lure their targets every day, achieving attacks that ensure them a large profit.”

"In this landscape, Greek businesses and government organizations that have objectively made leaps in digital transformation and cyber security shielding, must continue at the same pace with investments and cyber security strategy, reducing the risk of an imminent attack .”

Global statistics on cyber attacks:
