The most popular addon for Firefox and Chrome, it's the Adblock Plus που blocks ads from websites visited by the user, but requires resources from the system.
The Adblock Plus is the reason why Firefox and Chrome bind large amounts of system RAM while consume resources from the processor, resulting in the delay of the system (especially on older PCs) making websurfing a bit slower.
Adblock Plus has become quite a lot good blocking ads and many iFrames, but with the sites filled with share buttons, it now has more work to do. As a result, they spend several MB more (it can reach up to 300MB extra) for its operation, while it can reach 2GB extra (!) If a site is "heavy" from ads and iFrames.
There is no solution to replace Adblock Plus, however Flashblock and NoScript can achieve good results, with less consumption of "precious" MegaBytes.
