Cars and robots will require 300 giga DRAM

The RAM crisis shows no signs of abating, and the massive demand could get even worse as autonomous cars and robots become more advanced. All this while demand continues to grow.

Micron believes that fully autonomous cars will need 300 gigabytes of DRAM or more, and robots about the same.

Micron CEO Sanjay Mehrotra made his prediction during the company's recent earnings call. He said that driverless cars will represent a new segment, requiring massive amounts of RAM.

Mehrotra explained that today's average car has the least capable L2 ADAS (Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems), which contains about 16GB of DRAM.

There are six levels of ADAS.

Level 0 features no automation, with humans doing all the driving tasks, although there may be warnings such as lane departure alerts.

Level 1 adds basic assistance like adaptive cruise control or lane keeping, while Level 2 can combine these features to handle steering and speed simultaneously. But it still requires the driver's full attention.

Level 3 allows the car to handle most of the driving in certain conditions, although the human should be ready to take control when asked.

Level 4 goes a step further, allowing the vehicle to drive itself in specific environments or certain geographic areas without human intervention, while Level 5 represents full automation in all conditions, without the need for a driver at all.

Mehrotra said that vehicles with L4 autonomy will require over 300GB and that his company is already preparing to produce the industry's first 1g automotive-grade LPDDR5 DRAM.
