The hybrid aircraft - small balloon - helicopter called Airlander 10 managed to stay in the air for 20 minutes today after months of preparation.
The airship, originally destined for the US Army, but lost its funding to 2013 due to the cuts in defense spending.
The unusual shape of Airland 10 has a significantly lower carbon footprint than commercial aircraft. The aircraft has 90 meters in length and is about 15 meters larger than the larger passenger aircraft in the world.
It has four engines and the shape is maintained by the pressurized sun - about 38.000 cubic meters that inflates the hull made of carbon fiber.
Unlike traditional aircraft, the Airlander 10 does not need a runway, and is capable of landing on χιόνι or ice and water. If manned, the aircraft can remain in flight for up to five days.
If unmanned, Airlander 10 can stay in the air for more than two weeks. Its ability to take off and land in places other aircraft cannot, allows it to fly in some of the most inhospitable areas – such as an offshore oil rig. It can also carry up to 10 tons loadU.
The first successful (civilian) test flight made by the aircraft with better safety was held by Cardington Airfield, north of London.
