Alpha Bank The practice of illegal charges is expanding

After the National Bank, Alpha Bank is also proceeding with a unilateral conversion of consumers' deposit accounts, imposing monthly fees. EKPOIZO. is receiving a number of new complaints from consumers regarding letters that Alpha Bank recently sent to its customers. These letters inform - in an opaque and misleading manner and under the pretext of providing alleged privileges - that from February 1, 2026, free deposit accounts will automatically be included in the myAlpha Benefit Base transaction package, with a monthly subscription of 0,80 euros.

This conversion concerns accounts that have not carried any burden to date and is expected to adversely affect thousands of consumers in the near future, especially those belonging to vulnerable social groups, as well as those who do not have the ability to digitally manage their accounts and as a result are unable to object to these new terms in a timely manner.

Consumers, if they do not wish to have their account converted, must declare their refusal by January 30, 2026. If they do not do so in time, this inaction automatically translates into tacit acceptance of the charge and the new contractual terms. This is an unacceptable and abusive practice and has been ruled as such by the Court of Justice of the European Union. In the event that there are more co-beneficiaries on the account, they must be informed by the beneficiary and oppose together to cancel the arbitrary conversion of their contracts. Also, until the service is deactivated, the current month's subscription that has already been charged is not refunded!

E.K.POI.ZO. sent, on 30/12/2025, an Extrajudicial Summons against Alpha Bank regarding the unilateral modification of the existing contractual relationship and the change of basic characteristics of the existing accounts, calling on it to cease the illegal behavior, as well as the charging of the monthly subscription of 0,80 euros, since it has not secured the express consent of the customer/consumer. Furthermore, it calls on it to refrain from any misleading and inaccurate information regarding the possibilities and benefits of the package. At the same time, the bank is called upon to ensure the smooth operation of the existing accounts, without any form of burden. Alpha Bank, with its Extrajudicial Response dated 13/01/2026, insists on the arbitrary and abusive conversion of accounts, through unfounded and pretextual allegations.

As is known, E.K.P.I.ZO. has already filed a representative action against the National Bank at the Multi-Member Court of First Instance of Athens for the same reason, which will be heard on Wednesday 21/01/2026. It goes without saying that the legal actions of E.K.P.I.ZO. will also be extended to any other bank that follows similar practices. And of course, to other opaque, unjustified and illegal commissions that consumers are charged daily in their banking transactions.

EKPOIZO. calls on the Ministry of Development to finally assume its responsibility for the supervision and implementation of consumer protection legislation, to impose the sanctions provided for the use of abusive contractual terms and to protect consumers from unfair commercial practices and opaque and unjustified procurement.

Finally, the EKPOIZO. calls on consumers/customers of any Bank that imposes a charge on deposit accounts to complain in writing by completing the form on its website, here.
