In May 2024, VMware did the Workstation Pro and Fusion Pro for Mac available for free for personal computers, leaving the requirement to purchase exclusive licenses only for commercial customers.
Now, a few months later, VMware has announced that its hypervisor software is available for free to everyone.
With the announcement effective immediately, VMware Workstation Pro and Fusion Pro are no longer available for purchase. Fusion and Workstation can now be used at no cost.
At the same time, existing customers with commercial licenses will remain with their agreements in full force until the license expires. Customers will be able to continue using the products after the license expires, but without issuing a support ticket for troubleshooting.
Along with VMware Workstation and Fusion moving to a completely free model, VMware offers users the necessary documentation and support through Community Access, Product Documentation and Knowledge Base.
Going forward, VMware promises to continue investing in new features, providing timely updates with reliable performance, and optimizing its products.
