Apple has been criticized many times by the security community as it does not provide details of how it encrypts messages. While iMessage does end-to-end encryption of messages, photos and videos, Apple's critics have reported that because the code is not open and is not easy to test, security bugs may go unnoticed. 
John Hopkins researchers have even said that Apple should completely replace the encryption methodology it uses.

But once a "chipertext" attack is executed it can completely decrypt some older iMessage messages. Importantly, iMessage backs up Appel iCloud.
The best way to protect yourself is by regularly updating your software so that you have the latest and most important security updates.
Apple, for example, patched this error before it became widely known. This of course does not only apply to iOS, but to everyone software that you are using.
