Apple released the new iPhone 7 with a lot of news, but elementary characteristics: dual camera, improved processor speeds, water resistance and a new Home button.
One of the new features is the removal of the plug headphones - declaring the end of decades of universal compatibility.
But the truth is that removing the plug is an incredibly well-designed distraction of consumers' attention for what's really going on: Apple just could not make a major new update of the iPhone on time.
Did you really think so? Is there any real reason for removing the plug at this time, other than distraction?
While everyone is shouting how stupid the removal of the plug is, Apple has placed another iPhone.
The same move is also smart, because it signals the next big innovation, while at the same time postponing it… Remove the headphone jack to avoid criticism of remixing the same features, and the real innovation will come in 2017, as it has already announced, the same Apple.
So the company faithfully following Moore's Law, gives crumbs to pull it out this year and is preparing for the next big release it has planned and announced from now on for 2017.
Every other smartphone manufacturer follows the same Law. So almost all smartphones look and work in the same way within 2016, they have similar standards and a similar thickness.
The iPhone 7 is a compromise, along with an admission that the technology of smartphones needs significant additions. But it came as a way for the company to appease its customers by providing something that looks innovative, maintaining the product release cycle and essentially buying the time needed for the next big thing.
Unless you really believe that water resistance or a new color is worth spending hundreds of euros.
Personally, I like the iPhone 7, but I will not get it. I still have the iPhone 6 and maybe if at some point I see something worthwhile I might be tempted. But not now…
Apple seems to know this as it is totally coincidental that 2016 will be the first year that the company will not share the numbers of pre-orders in the press. Coincidence; or does the company know that iPhone 7 traffic was an elemental step, not a pioneering leap?
Nevertheless, the iPhone 7 is the pinnacle of perfection. It's a beautiful phone, refined with a maturity due to three years work.
You probably will not find a more perfect iPhone from iPhone 7, but in fact if you have an iPhone 6 or 6s you do not have to upgrade.
The fact is really scary for the entire smartphone industry.
