Earlier this week, Wall Street journal released one interesting publication who reported that Apple could abandon the Lightning Port and replace it with a USB-C on the upcoming iPhone. As it turns out, the enthusiasm of many is rather a bit premature.
Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo addressed the rumors today, writing that all three upcoming models iPhones will continue to use the Lightning port. According to the analyst, Apple will likely introduce a number of internal changes to bring fast charging capability to the devices.
The analyst says that hardware tweaks will allow Apple to replicate some of its benefits door USB Type-C while still using Lightning. As 9to5Mac notes, it remains unclear if this rumor has anything to do with previous reports of wireless charging.
Kuo additionally mentioned that although a USB-C port is bound to have more possibilities since Lightning, Cupertino has very little incentive to make the switch. The analyst says that the two main reasons Apple is insisting on Lightning are the licensing royalties it will have to pay for USB-C, as well as Lightning's small size, which allows the company to comfortably "tuck" it into a lot small appliances.
Η Apple Lossless Audio CODEC (ALAC), will actually lose some revenue from USB-C licensing, which makes sense if one thinks of the money it will lose if it allows its customers to use the same cable for phones and laptops.
In any case, the chances of seeing a USB-C in device of Apple are very small and we will probably have to wait at least another year, until the company decides on some radical change in the design of the iPhone.
