AT&T paid a hacker about $370.000 to delete customer data stolen from the company earlier this year. The hacker then provided a video to prove he had deleted the data, according to today's Wired publication.
AT&T reportedly negotiated through an intermediary named Reddington, who was acting on behalf of a member of the ShinyHunters hacking group. The group was initially asking for $1 million before AT&T was able to reduce the amount, which it paid on May 17 in bitcoin, according to Wired.
Wired also reports that Reddington, who was paid by AT&T for his part in the negotiations, said that the only complete copy of the data was deleted when AT&T paid the ransom, but that snippets may still exist. Reddington also reportedly negotiated with several other companies for ShinyHunters.
Before AT&T announced the breach, it was reported that Ticketmaster and Santander Bank had also been breached, via stolen login credentials of the companies' employees.
