From March 18, businesses and individuals based in the German capital will be able to use the suffix .berlin at the end of their addresses.
The suffix - technically known as the generic Top Level Domain - was created following an agreement between the local government of Berlin and ICANN, the US agency for assigning names and numbers on the Internet. After Berlin, cities like London , Paris, New York, Johannesburg and Nagoya will have their own endings. London will be available from April.
The .berlin ending will cost between 30 and 60 Euros per year and is expected to raise approximately 500.000 euros in the first year. It was managed by dotBerlin.
