The site Blitzortung.org has been around since 2005 and can show you where lightning strikes and where there is a storm, in real time.
With today's start of the rains in the Greek territory, we want to remind you of a very old site that lives and still reigns. This is Blitzortung.org, which in German means "Lightning Detection" and it does what its name says.
It shows you Online the lightning that falls all over the Earth.
Those who already know it usually observe the phenomenon of lightning only in their lot. But we suggest you open the fan and to see complete activity across the Earth at once. And don't forget to check it out at “Dynamic size” of the map.
Blitzortung is a non-commercial group of citizens and amateurs supported by professional scientists. It operates a worldwide network of approximately 1800 active stations equipped with a VLF radio wave receiver and located in 83 countries.
These receivers are used to determine the location of lightning strikes based on detector measurements and the time of flight of the received signals.
The only compensation the operators of these stations receive is free access to the raw data of all stations. The data is processed from various sites using geoinformatics methods and made available online in a map display.
According to the website, such a station costs a maximum of $355 to build yourself. They are primarily aimed at individuals with an interest in meteorology and expertise in electrical and computer technology.
There is no formal organization behind it, no contracts and no fees or contributions are charged. The project is for personal edification only and is purely hobby.
But it is very informative about where there are storms now and how strong they are.
