The experts at language they created a short list of six words that reflect the moods and conversations that helped shape the language of the past year.
After two weeks of public voting and extensive debate, experts gathered to consider public input, and the Results voting, before declaring Brain rot as the Word of the Year for 2024.
"Brain rot" is defined as "the supposed deterioration of a person's mental or spiritual condition due to overconsumption of some substance.
Experts noted that "brain rot" gained new meaning this year as a term used to describe concerns about the impact of consuming excessive amounts of low-quality online content, especially from social media.
The term increased in frequency of use by 230% between 2023 and 2024.
