Canonical apologizes for boot failure on Ubuntu 18.10 & 18.04, and now has a fix for it.
Η Canonical a new updated one has been released version of its kernel for Ubuntu 18.10 (Cosmic Cuttlefish) and Ubuntu 18.04.1 LTS (Bionic Beaver) to address the boot failure created by the latest kernel security code version.
The problematic kernel security patch released by Canonical on February 4 was available for Ubuntu 18.10, Ubuntu 16.0.4 LTS and Ubuntu 14.04 LTS, but only Ubuntu 18.10 machines were affected by the bug, which could prevent booting if the machine used certain graphics chipsets.
Specifically Canonical said : “USN-3878-1 has detected vulnerabilities points in the Linux kernel. Unfortunately, this update introduced an issue that could prevent systems with certain graphics chipsets from booting. This update fixes the problem. We apologize for the inconvenience."
Users are asked to update their kernels immediately
The problem affects not only the Ubuntu 18.10 (Cosmic Cuttlefish) systems, but also the Ubuntu 18.04 LTS (Bionic Beaver) running the Linux 4.18 HWE (Hardware Enablement) kernel.
If you use Ubuntu 18.10 or Ubuntu 18.04 LTS with the Linux 4.18 kernel, you are prompted to update your kernel immediately with linux-image 4.18.0-15.16 for Ubuntu 18.10 or linux-image 4.18.0-15.16 ~ 18.04. 1 for Ubuntu 18.04 LTS. To update your system, follow the instructions at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Security/Upgrades.
