Casio has released a free version of its fx-300ES PLUS scientific calculator. It can be accessed through a browser, giving students and educators access to a familiar tool without having to purchase hardware.
The fx-300ES PLUS electronic calculator is available through ClassPad.net and works on PCs, Chromebooks, tablets and other devices with a modern browser. Casio says there is no subscription, app download or purchase required.
Users must log in with a Google, Google Classroom, Microsoft, or Clever account. Once logged in, they will have access to a working digital representation of the fx-300ES PLUS physical calculator.
“The 300ES PLUS has been a staple in math and science classrooms for years because it’s reliable and easy to use,” said Marko Wityk, senior general manager of EdTech at Casio America. “This calculator takes that same experience and makes it available to any student/educator.”
The electronic calculator features Casio's Natural Textbook Display, which displays fractions, equations and other mathematical expressions in a format that resembles the way they appear in textbooks.
Casio also included several features specifically aimed at educators.
The projection mode magnifies the calculator screen for classroom monitors, projectors, and interactive whiteboards. Teachers can demonstrate a calculation while students follow the same steps on their own devices.
Free calculator websites aren't new, and phones already come with plenty of capable math apps. The Casio's advantage is familiarity. Students and teachers who are already familiar with the fx-300ES PLUS can use it with much the same layout in a browser.
Although the press releases will range from very select to rare, I said I'd pass...because sometimes the editors hide.
